The 2000s were not a time we usually associate with minimalism. In fact, nobody really knew what minimalism even meant back then, or so it would seem if you took a look at the sneaker design of the era.

Roll the years back to 2004 and you’re right in the middle of the vis-tech era. That is, visible tech. We have always loved to see the inner workings of things, and in the noughties, this was heavily apparent in footwear. In the time of the Nike Shox, adidas responded with a shoe that’s back some two decades later years later. Welcome back the adidas Megaride AG Aurora Coffee.

The adidas Megaride made a surprising return last year when Willy Chavarria opted to use the lesser-known silhouette as the debut release in his partnership with the Three Stripes.

Since then, the silhouette has been treated to a much wider release and greater availability. The latest to catch our eye might be the best yet. The adidas Megaride AG in Aurora Coffee sees the shoe dressed in a soft neutral colorway at odds with the wildly chunky silhouette.

In true maximalist Y2K style, the silhouette features a huge, sculptural sole unit or, as adidas refers to it: the Megaride propulsion unit.

But while the techy silhouette errs on the harder side when it comes to styling, the tonal Aurora Coffee colorway counteracts it, softening the edges and maximizing the design’s everyday wearability.
