American film director, screenwriter, and producer John Singleton passed away on Monday night at the age of 51. Singleton was taken off life support following a stroke that hospitalized him earlier in the month on April 17. Ever since the news broke, fans and peers have taken to social media to share their condolences, memories, and devastation.

"It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today," Singleton's family said in a statement yesterday. "This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors."

Reports suggest that Singleton passed away peacefully while surrounded by friends and family at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is survived by his mother, Sheila Ward, his father, Danny Singleton, and his children Justice, Maasai, Hadar, Cleopatra, Selenesol, Isis, and Seven.

Singleton was the first-ever African American and the youngest person at 24 to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Director for his 1991 masterpiece Boyz n the Hood. He is also responsible for Poetic Justice starring Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur, Baby Boy, Shaft, and Four Brothers, among other pictures.
