Johnny Depp's film about the murder of Notorious B.I.G., City of Lies, has been pulled ahead of its release in theaters, Variety reports.

The movie was scheduled for rollout on September 7, but a spokesperson for Global Road Entertainment confirmed on Monday that the project is now undated. City of Lies is based on Randall Sullivan's book LAbyrinth and follows the investigation into Biggie and Tupac Shakur's killings. Depp plays real-life LAPD detective Russell Poole, who worked the Notorious B.I.G. case. The film also stars Forest Whitaker as journalist Jack Jackson.

The announcement comes a month after Depp was sued by location manager Greg Brooks for an alleged assault on set. A recent Rolling Stone profile revealed that the actor is also facing financial difficulties.

While it remains to be seen if City of Lies will be given a release date, Depp will soon be appearing in Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwaldwhich hits theaters in November.
