adidas is tapping straight into the year's biggest terrace culture moment with its latest Handball Spezial drop, by reworking the sporty icon through the lens of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Originally born on indoor courts in 1979, the Spezial has long since graduated into a certified street staple, adopted by football (read soccer) fans and style purists alike. Now, adidas is doubling down on that heritage by linking the silhouette back to the global game, through a tightly curated “federation pack” of country-specific colorways.

Think less loud merch, more coded allegiance. The pack spans 11 nations so far, including Germany, Japan, and Argentina, with each pair translating national identity into subtle leather executions and the brand's signature triple-striped detailing. The Mexico iteration, for example, lands in a crisp off-white base accented with green and red hits, echoing the national flag while staying firmly within the Spezial’s understated design language.

That balance is key. The Handball Spezial has always thrived in the margins — neither as ubiquitous as its sibling Samba, nor as cutting-edge as adidas' techy runners. This World Cup pack leans into that sweet spot, offering something that feels both timely and timeless. Premium suede uppers, gum soles, and OG branding keep things grounded in the model’s DNA, while flag-nodding touches add just enough narrative to justify the patriotic refresh.

With a global tournament spread across the US, Mexico, and Canada, adidas isn’t just selling sneakers. It’s selling team spirit, in the shape of footwear worth chanting over from up in the stands.
