He Helped Design the iPhone. Now, He Designed Pharrell's Travel Kit
Finally, a travel kit made for hardcore r/Apple lurkers. Pharrell Williams' plant-based skincare brand Humanrace has teamed up with former Apple industrial designer Eugene Whang to create the ultimate toiletries bag, turning a travel essential into an object worthy of all the high-end creams it carries.
The roll-up kit is made from a single piece of undyed ultrasuede, a Japanese technical fabric that mimics leather but is actually made from synthetics and plant-based materials — fitting for a vegan beauty brand. The Travel Bag comes pre-packed with four Humanrace classics: the 7D Retrograde Gel Cleanser, Lotus Enzyme Exfoliator, and Humidifying Face and Body creams. It’s a solid lineup of skincare essentials to keep you supple on holiday, but let’s be real: the draw here isn’t just the Pharrell-backed skincare set; it’s the sleek, simple design.
Though this marks Whang’s first foray into the beauty industry, the shaggy-haired creative is no stranger to making well-crafted objects — or understanding the need for a trusty travel bag. His two-decade tenure at Apple was a study in contrasts: working under Jony Ive on everything from the iPod Nano to AirPods, while also DJing around San Francisco and running his own record label. The contrast continues today, with Whang taking on DJ sets in Seoul and Tokyo while crafting intentional, limited-run objects with brands and studios worldwide.
Setting aside the Apple of it all, what makes his Humanrace linkup feel so authentic is that it follows a philosophy he’s developed after his years at the tech giant and a subsequent stint at Ive’s LoveFrom studio. As he told Highsnobiety for our Spring 2026 issue, this new chapter in his practice isn’t defined by big brands or corporate studios. “I don’t want to work for,” he said. “I want to work with.”
With that ethos guiding him, of course, it was Whang who turned out an impressively slick travel kit for a beauty brand founded by the hitmaking producer and Louis Vuitton menswear director Pharrell. That’s what we call a perfect mashup.
